Northern Kentucky University (NKU) is a public university in Highland Heights, Kentucky. It is part of the Kentucky state university system. NKU was founded in 1968 as Northern Kentucky State College, a two-year institution. In 1976, it merged with the Kentucky State University system and became a four-year university. In 1979, it was renamed Northern Kentucky University. NKU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university offers more than 100 undergraduate programs and over 60 graduate programs. NKU has an enrollment of over 14,000 students. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I. NKU is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
