Mississippi State University (MSU) is a public research university in Mississippi. The main campus is located in Starkville, and its branch campuses are located in Meridian, Biloxi, and Vicksburg. MSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). MSU is a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and is ranked as one of the top 100 public universities in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.

MSU was founded in 1878 as an agricultural and mechanical college. The university was created by the Mississippi Legislature to fulfill the mission of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts of 1862 and 1890. These acts provided for the establishment of land-grant colleges in each state to teach agriculture, engineering, and military science. MSU began offering classes in 1882 and became the first land-grant university in the state of Mississippi. The university was renamed Mississippi State University in 1932.

MSU offers over 170 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university is organized into eight colleges: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Forestry, Human Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. MSU’s research expenditures totaled $176 million in FY 2016, and the university is home to eight research centers, including the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the Mississippi Polymer Institute.

MSU’s athletic teams, known as the Bulldogs, compete in the NCAA Division I as members of the SEC. The university’s sports teams include baseball, basketball, football, golf, and track and field. The Mississippi State Bulldogs football team has won six SEC championships and appeared in bowl games 27 times, including the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Gator Bowl.
