Founded in 1842, Meadville Lombard Theological School is one of the oldest continuously operating free-standing graduate schools of religion in the United States. It is also one of the first co-educational institutions of higher learning in the country. The school is located on Chicago's Near North Side, in the historic district known as the Gold Coast.

Meadville Lombard is a member of the Association of American Universities and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It offers master's degrees in divinity, religious studies, and ministry, as well as a Doctor of Ministry degree. The school is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Meadville Lombard's campus consists of several historic buildings, including the former home of Chicago mayor Fred A. Busse. The school is also home to the Clifton Waller Barrett Library, which houses one of the largest collections of religious books and materials in the Midwest.

Meadville Lombard's faculty includes scholars of religion from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The school is committed to social justice and offers a number of programs and initiatives that support this commitment. These include the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Religion; the Center for the Study of Gender, Sexuality, and Religion; and the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict.
