Founded in 1854 as the Lincoln Institute, Lincoln University is a historically black university located in Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through its four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Management, the College of Education and Human Services, and the College of Graduate Studies. Lincoln University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Lincoln University was founded as the Lincoln Institute in 1854 by a group of African-American Quakers. The Quakers believed in the equality of all people and were committed to education as a means of empowering African Americans. The Lincoln Institute was one of the first schools in the country to offer higher education to African Americans.

In 1866, the Lincoln Institute was renamed Lincoln University. The name change was made in honor of Abraham Lincoln, who had been assassinated the year before. Lincoln University was one of the first schools in the country to offer graduate education to African Americans.

Lincoln University has a long history of producing leaders in the African-American community. alumni include the poet Langston Hughes, civil rights leader Thurgood Marshall, and musician Dizzy Gillespie.
