IBS was founded in 1966 by the late Dr. D.T. Suzuki, a world-renowned authority on Zen Buddhism. IBS is committed to academic excellence and the training of Buddhist leaders for the 21st century. IBS faculty come from a variety of religious and academic backgrounds, and the student body is similarly diverse.

IBS's curriculum is designed to provide a solid grounding in the major Asian Buddhist traditions, as well as the critical methods and theories of religious studies. Students are also encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary studies, such as Buddhist-Christian dialogue, environmental studies, gender studies, and social justice.

The Institute of Buddhist Studies is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.
