The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) is an accredited, low-residency, research-oriented graduate school offering a PhD in philosophy and aesthetics. The program is interdisciplinary, with core faculty representing philosophy, art history, critical theory, and studio art.

IDSVA’s innovative curriculum is designed to prepare students for successful careers in academia, the arts, and other professions that value rigorous thinking, writing, and research. The program emphasizes close working relationships between faculty and students, and all students are guaranteed four years of full funding, including a stipend, health insurance, and tuition remission.

IDSVA’s campus is located in the historic district of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and students have the opportunity to take advantage of the city’s many cultural resources, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The program is divided into four phases: the first two years are devoted to coursework; the third year to the completion of a dissertation proposal and the writing of the dissertation; and the fourth year to the defense of the dissertation and the preparation of the dissertation for publication.

IDSVA is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive community, and we welcome applications from individuals who have been historically underrepresented in higher education.
