Holy Cross College (HCC) is a private, Catholic college in Notre Dame, Indiana. Founded in 1866 by the United States Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross, HCC is one of the oldest Catholic colleges in the country. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. HCC offers bachelor's degrees in over 30 majors, as well as a master's degree in education and a doctorate in physical therapy.
The campus of Holy Cross College is located on 176 acres (71 ha) east of the main campus of the University of Notre Dame. HCC is organized into four main academic divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Nursing. The college has a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1 and an average class size of 20.
In 1866, the United States Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross founded Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana. The college was established as a response to the closure of the University of Notre Dame by the Indiana General Assembly in 1865. Notre Dame had been forced to close due to financial difficulties and the anti-Catholic sentiment that was prevalent in the state at the time.
Holy Cross College was originally located on the main campus of the University of Notre Dame. In 1867, the college moved to its current location on East Washington Street. The college was originally an all-male institution, but began admitting women in 1970.
Today, Holy Cross College is a coeducational institution with an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students.
