Hofstra University is a private university in Hempstead, New York. Long Island's largest private university, Hofstra originated in 1935 as an extension of New York University (NYU) under the name Nassau College–Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island. It became independent Hofstra College in 1939 and gained university status in 1963.

The university is named after William C. Hofstra, a wealthy benefactor of the school who in 1937 donated the land for the college's first campus. Hofstra's main campus is located on 240 acres (97 ha) in Hempstead, New York, about 7 miles (11 km) east of New York City's borough of Queens. The campus is adjacent to Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.

Hofstra University offers more than 160 undergraduate programs and about 165 graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines. Hofstra was ranked No. 97 in Regional Universities North by U.S. News & World Report for 2020.
