Henderson State University (HSU) is a public university in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The university is Arkansas's only member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of disciplines.
HSU was founded in 1890 as Arkadelphia Methodist College. It became a state college in 1929 and a four-year university in 1974. The university is named for James L. Henderson, the first president of the college.
HSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II Great American Conference.
HSU enrolls approximately 3,000 students from across the United States and around the world. The university's faculty includes scholars in a variety of disciplines, including business, education, English, history, and science.
The university's campus is located on 150 acres (61 ha) of land in the Ouachita Mountains. The campus includes several historic buildings, including the Administration Building, which was built in 1890; the Womack Hall, which was built in 1924; and the Huie Library, which was built in 1966.
