Fort Hays State University is a public university in Hays, Kansas. It is the third-largest university in the state of Kansas and is one of the six state universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. The university is a member of the Midwestern Association of Colleges and Universities.

FHSU was founded in 1902 as the Western Branch of the Kansas Normal School. It became Fort Hays Kansas State Normal School in 1904 and Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1923. In 1974, it merged with the state's two other teacher colleges to become the present-day Fort Hays State University.

The university offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and 19 graduate programs. Fort Hays State is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has been so since 1913. The university's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II and are known as the Tigers.
