Florida State University (FSU) is a public research university in Tallahassee, Florida. It is a senior member of the State University System of Florida. Founded in 1851, it is located on the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida. The university is classified as an R1 doctoral university with the highest research activity in the Carnegie Classification. It is a sea-grant, space-grant, and urban-land grant university, and is the only school in Florida to hold all three designations. It is also a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), the only university in Florida to be a part of this prestigious group. The school has a strong commitment to research, and its faculty members have won numerous awards, including six Nobel Prizes, five Pulitzer Prizes, and 20 MacArthur Fellowships. The university has also produced a number of Fulbright Scholars.
