FDU-Metro was founded in 1942 as Fairleigh Dickinson College-New York Metropolitan Division. The school began offering classes at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. In 1955, the college moved to its current location in Teaneck, New Jersey. In 1974, the college was renamed Fairleigh Dickinson University-Teaneck. In 1979, the university established a School of Pharmacy and a School of Nursing. In 1985, the university established a School of Education. In 1986, the university was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In 1988, the university established a School of Visual and Performing Arts. In 1989, the university established a School of Hospitality Management. In 1991, the university was renamed Fairleigh Dickinson University-Metropolitan Campus.

Fairleigh Dickinson University-Metropolitan Campus is located on a 55-acre (22 ha) campus in Teaneck, New Jersey. The campus is adjacent to the New Jersey Institute of Technology and near the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The campus features several academic buildings, a library, a student center, a gymnasium, and a performing arts center. The university also has a campus in Florham Park, New Jersey, which houses the School of Pharmacy and the School of Nursing.
