Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is a public historically black university in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Founded in 1891 as a normal school, it became a four-year institution in 1967 and a university in 2002. ECSU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The university offers baccalaureate degrees in 38 disciplines, masters degrees in 14 disciplines, and one doctoral degree program in Educational Leadership. The student-faculty ratio is 16:1 and the average class size is 20. ECSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and master's degrees.

ECSU was founded as a normal school in 1891 to train African-American teachers. The school was originally located in the Union Baptist Church in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In 1893, the school moved to a new location on Roanoke Island. In 1909, the name of the school was changed to the State Normal and Industrial School at Elizabeth City. The school began offering four-year degrees in 1937 and changed its name to the North Carolina College for Negroes in 1941. In 1969, the name was changed again to Elizabeth City State College. The school became a university in 2002.

ECSU has a number of student organizations including fraternities and sororities, honor societies, and religious organizations. The university also has a marching band, a jazz band, and a choir.

ECSU is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The city has a population of 18,000 and is located on the Albemarle Sound. The climate is temperate and the average annual rainfall is 45 inches. Elizabeth City is home to the Museum of the Albemarle, the arts district, and the Waterfront Park.
