Eastern Washington University (EWU) is a public university in Cheney, Washington. EWU offers more than 125 undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide variety of disciplines. EWU is located in Cheney, a city with a population of about 12,000 people, just west of Spokane. Spokane is the second-largest city in Washington State with a population of about 210,000 people.

EWU was founded in 1882 as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy, a private school for primary and secondary students. The academy was named for its founder and first president, Benjamin P. Cheney. In 1889, the academy was renamed Cheney Normal School and began offering two-year teaching certificates. In 1937, the normal school was renamed Eastern Washington College of Education, and in 1961, the college was renamed Eastern Washington State College. The state college was granted university status in 1977 and renamed Eastern Washington University.

EWU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The university is organized into six colleges: the College of Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences; the College of Business and Public Administration; the College of Education; the College of Health, Science, and Technology; the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; and the Graduate School.

EWU offers bachelor's degrees in over 60 majors, master's degrees in 27 programs, and doctoral degrees in 4 programs. The most popular majors at EWU are Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Education; Social Sciences; and Health Professions and Related Programs.

EWU has an active student life, with over 150 student organizations on campus. The university also has a strong athletics program, with teams competing in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference. The EWU Eagles have won numerous conference championships and have made several appearances in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
