In 1872, the Methodist Episcopal Church founded Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. The university is named after its first president, John A. Doane. Doane was the first college in Nebraska and is one of the 28 colleges that make up the Council of Independent Colleges. The school enrolls about 1,000 students from 30 states and 15 countries. The student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1 and the average class size is 19. The university offers more than 50 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs. Doane is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
