The university was founded in 1931 as the DeForest Training School, a two-year trade school. In 1953, the school was renamed DeVry Technical Institute and began offering four-year programs in electronics and business. In 1976, DeVry was granted university status and became DeVry Institute of Technology. In 2002, the school changed its name to DeVry University.

DeVry University-Arizona is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The business, technology, and healthcare programs are accredited by various professional organizations.
