Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is a private, all-graduate research university located in Claremont, California, a city 35 miles (56 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 1925, CGU is a member of the Claremont Colleges which includes five undergraduate (Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Scripps College, and Pitzer College) and two graduate (CGU and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences) institutions of higher education.

The university offers master's and doctoral degrees in 24 departments and programs, and emphasizes interdisciplinary study. Ranked as the 16th-best graduate school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2020, Claremont Graduate University is tied for the 60th-best private university in the nation. It is tied for the 80th-best university in the nation for producing Fulbright Scholars.

CGU was founded in 1925 as the Claremont Graduate School. The founding president was James A. Blaisdell, who served from 1925 until his death in 1940. The school awarded its first doctorate in 1930.

In the 1940s, the Claremont Graduate School joined with the other Claremont Colleges (Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Scripps College, and Pitzer College) to form the Claremont Colleges consortium.

In the 1950s, the school began awarding master's degrees, and in the 1960s, the school began offering doctorates in several fields. In 1970, the school was renamed Claremont Graduate University.

Today, Claremont Graduate University is a private, all-graduate research university with 24 departments and programs. The university offers master's and doctoral degrees, and emphasizes interdisciplinary study.

The university is ranked as the 16th-best graduate school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2020, and is tied for the 60th-best private university in the nation. It is tied for the 80th-best university in the nation for producing Fulbright Scholars.
