Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science was founded in 1882 by Dr. George W. Renner. Dr. Renner was a Cincinnati physician and professor at the Eclectic Medical Institute. He saw a need for a school to train people in the art of embalming and funeral directing. The college was originally located on Sycamore Street in Cincinnati. In 1884, the college moved to its current location on Central Parkway.
The college has been accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education since 1949. The college offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Mortuary Science as well as a one-year certificate program. The Associate of Applied Science degree program consists of 64 credit hours of coursework. The courses include anatomy, physiology, pathology, funeral service management, funeral service law, and funeral service ethics. The one-year certificate program consists of 32 credit hours of coursework.
The college has an on-campus crematory and a funeral home. The funeral home is open to the public and offers a variety of services, including traditional funerals, cremation, and pre-planning. The college also has a student-run cemetery on campus.
