Central College is a small, private, liberal arts college located in Pella, Iowa. The college was founded in 1853 by the Rev. George M. Shipherd and the Rev. John H. Armstrong as the Central Academy. The name was changed to Central College in 1855. The college is affiliated with the Reformed Church in America and is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Central College has an enrollment of 1,396 students and a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1. The college offers more than 50 majors and pre-professional programs. The most popular majors are Business, Education, Nursing, Biology, and Psychology. Central College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The college has a strong commitment to global education and offers study abroad programs in more than 40 countries. Central College is also home to the Vermeer Science Center, which houses a planetarium, observatory, and science exhibits.
