Castleton University is a public university in Castleton, Vermont. The university is part of the Vermont State Colleges system. Founded in 1787, Castleton is the oldest college in Vermont. The university offers bachelor's degrees in over 30 majors and master's degrees in five graduate programs.

Castleton University was founded in 1787 as the Vermont Academy. The academy was chartered by the Vermont General Assembly to offer secondary education to the children of Vermont's frontier families. The academy's first class graduated in 1791. In 1814, the academy was renamed Castleton Medical College in an effort to attract more students. The college trained doctors and other medical professionals for the first half of the 19th century.

In 1866, the college closed its medical program and reopened as a liberal arts college. The college expanded its curriculum and began offering bachelor's degrees in 1867. In 1934, the college was renamed Castleton State College. The college continued to grow in the 20th century, adding graduate programs and new majors. In 2018, the college was renamed Castleton University.

Today, Castleton University is a comprehensive university offering over 30 bachelor's degrees and five graduate programs. The university is committed to providing a high-quality education to its students. The university has a strong tradition of service to the community and the state of Vermont.
