The university is also home to the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, the only creative writing institute in the state of Wisconsin.

Carroll University was founded in 1846 by the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Carroll, a pioneer in the education of women. The university was originally located in the city of Milwaukee, but moved to its current location in Waukesha in 1953. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
