Brown University is a private research university in Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

The university was founded as an attempt to establish an institution of higher learning in the colony of Rhode Island. Brown's charter was unique in that it was one of the first to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of religious affiliation, and it was also one of the first to admit students regardless of their religious beliefs.

The university has been coeducational since 1891 and currently has around 6,500 undergraduate and 8,900 graduate students. Brown is a member of the Ivy League and is ranked 14th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

The university is known for its liberal arts curriculum and its commitment to the principles of freedom and equality. Brown students have a reputation for being independent and creative thinkers.
