American Jewish University (AJU) is a private, non-denominational Jewish research university located in Los Angeles, California. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs through five schools and colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the School of Business and Management, and the Graduate School of Education and Psychology.
AJU was founded in 1947 by Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan, a leading figure in the Reconstructionist movement of Judaism, and Dr. Samuel Sandmel, a Hebrew Bible scholar. The university's mission is to "inspire and prepare its students for leadership and service to the Jewish people and the global society."
AJU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). The university's endowment is over $200 million.
Notable alumni of AJU include Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People; Rabbi David Wolpe, the Max Webb Senior Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles; and Rabbi Naomi Levy, author of To Begin Again: How Love and Marriage Can Heal After Infidelity.
