The Academy of Vocal Arts was founded in 1934 by Dr. William Schuman, a renowned vocal pedagogue. Dr. Schuman’s vision was to create a training program that would provide young singers with the opportunity to receive the highest level of vocal instruction. The Academy has been true to its mission over the past eighty years, and has trained some of the world’s most successful opera singers. alumni of the Academy include Renee Fleming, Placido Domingo, and James Levine.

Admission RequirementsThe Academy of Vocal Arts is a highly selective, independent vocal training institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The institution was founded in 1934 by Helen Corning Warden, with the goal of providing comprehensive vocal training to aspiring opera singers. The Academy of Vocal Arts is one of the few institutions in the United States that offers a full scholarship to every student, covering the cost of tuition, room, and board.
To be eligible for admission to the Academy of Vocal Arts, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have completed high school or the equivalent. They must also demonstrate exceptional vocal talent and potential through an audition process. The audition process consists of an initial screening, followed by an in-person audition.
During the initial screening, applicants must submit a recorded audition, which must include two contrasting selections from the standard operatic repertoire. Applicants who are invited to the in-person audition will be asked to perform two additional selections from the repertoire, as well as sight-singing and vocal exercises.
The Academy of Vocal Arts admits a limited number of students each year, typically between 12 and 20. Admission to the Academy of Vocal Arts is highly competitive, and only the most talented and dedicated singers are accepted into the program.
